Epic Overview
Introduction
As reports are distributed from Epic, Epic sends an HL7 message with the encoded PDF. When Synapse receives the new HL7 file from Epic, Synapse decodes the PDF, saves it as a PDF, and displays the Report icon in the Worklist and in PowerJacket to indicate a report is available. While you are logged into Synapse, Epic remains open for the next study.
Synapse achieves study synchronization by sending and receiving XML file updates triggered by opening, closing, and switching between patients and studies. Epic and Synapse generate a separate XML file for every action taken on a patient or study in either application.
- Incoming files received from Epic are stored in the designated folder. See your System Administrator for more information.
- Files that were updated in Synapse are stored in the designated folder. See your System Administrator for more information.
As Synapse receives new distributed reports from Epic, the Epic report is decoded and stored in Synapse with the study.
Epic integration allows you to:
- View images in Synapse.
- Open a clinical report PDF in PowerJacket and in the Viewer.
- Update the report status as noted below.
If a report already exists in Synapse and an updated version of that report is received from Epic, Synapse displays the most recent version of the report and manages updated reports as follows:
- Updated Preliminary reports from Epic overwrite preliminary reports in Synapse.
- Updated Final reports from Epic do not overwrite final reports in Synapse.
- Updated Corrected reports from Epic overwrite corrected reports in Synapse.
Synapse supports integration with Epic for:
- Epic Driven Workflow:
- Load a study from Epic's worklist.
- View study images in Synapse Viewer.
- Structured reporting completed in Epic.
- Synapse Driven Workflow: Viewing patient records in Epic while viewing images and completing the report, if applicable, in Synapse.
- Load a study from Synapse Worklist.
- View a study from the Synapse Worklist.
- View study images in the Synapse Viewer.
- Structured reporting completed in Synapse Advanced Reporting or third-party reporting software.
- Patient record loaded in Epic.
Epic integration provides a bidirectional workflow that is driven by Epic and Synapse.
