Using Shutter

Introduction

You can use shutter to crop an area of an image to show only the essential part of that image.

Synapse provides several shutter options:

  • DICOM shutter, which is sent with the image
  • Manual shutter, which you can create, but cannot save
  • Horizontal shutter, which you can create, but cannot save
  • Shutter without zoom, which you can create, but cannot save

Steps

  1. Right-click the image to display a context menu.
  2. Select Spatial Tools, and do one of the following:

    If you want to ...

    • Click and hold the mouse button.
    • Move the mouse to identify the area of interest.
    • When you finished selecting the area of interest, release the mouse button.

    Create a horizontal shutter.

    • Select Horizontal shutter. Synapse changes the cursor to an arrow.
    • Click and release. Synapse displays a horizontal shutter in all open viewports.
    • Move the mouse forward and backward to change the horizontal shutter position.
    • Optional: Move the mouse wheel forward to decrease the size of the horizontal shutter. Move the mouse wheel backward to increase the size of the horizontal shutter.
    • To stop horizontal shutter, press ESC or initiate a mouse operation, such as pan or window level.

    Create a shutter without zoom.

    • Click and release. Synapse displays a shutter in all open viewports.
    • To move the shutter without zoom window, click, hold the mouse button on the shutter without zoom window, and move the mouse.
    • Optional: To resize the shutter area, click an edge of the shutter and drag.
    • To stop shutter without zoom, press ESC or initiate a mouse operation, such as pan or window level.

Note:

Because shutter is a toggle function, the Enable Shutter tool label changes state to indicate whether it is on or off.

  • When the shutter icon is white, the shutter is on.
  • When the shutter is black with a white outline, the shutter is off. There is no disable shutter option.

Results

Synapse crops and applies zoom-to-fit to the image to ensure that the image area inside the shutter boundary uses as much of the active viewport as possible.

For manual shutter, Synapse displays Shutter Overlay Indicator .

When you apply horizontal shutter, Synapse applies this operation to all open viewports. When you apply shutter without zoom to a viewport, Synapse applies this operation to viewports with the same orientation.

Additional Options

Use one of the following options to toggle shutter:

  • Click Shutter Overlay Indicator to toggle between showing and hiding the shutter.
  • To remove all the manual shutters from a study or to close a DICOM shutter, see Using Reset Image State.
  • To turn shutter on or off with a keyboard shortcut, press SHIFT+ S.
