Extra Series Management Overview
Introduction
An extra series occurs when a study contains series not expected by the series-based reading protocol.
When Synapse detects an extra series and the user setting to display
extra series in blank viewports is disabled, Synapse automatically generates
an Extras step in the reading protocol to display the extra series. All
extra series have the plus 
next
to the series name in the text overlay.
You can view these extra series by selecting the Extras protocol step or dragging a thumbnail image from the Series Picker.
Synapse displays the extra series in the Extras step in the following ways:
- Using the same page layout as the first step in the reading protocol
- Using the same order as shown in the Series Picker
Extra Series Alerts
By default Synapse displays an extra series alert to indicate that there are extra series available. If you select Don't show 'Extra' series alerts in the displayed alert dialog box, Synapse updates the Extra Series User Settings, and Synapse does not display any extra series alerts. You must select Display 'extra series' alert for in Extra Series User Settings in order to display the extra series alert again.
Blank Viewports
Optionally, Synapse fills blank viewports with extra series as configured in User Settings. If a viewport displays a missing series alert, Synapse does not display an extra series in that viewport.
